What's today, again?

Prepare for Spanish communication assignment scheduled on Zoom at 4pm, check. Empty Dishwasher, check. Spend time on editing project, check. Spanish on Zoom with Alicia, check. Submit my written portion to ICON Spanish page online, check. Make dinner – spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, Caesar salad, yum! Clean up dinner mess, check. Write, post, and share 500 words for today’s blog post, check. Finishing up on a busy Saturday, my mind naturally lingered to what I still wanted to accomplish this weekend. I looked over the various online class pages to make sure I knew what I needed to prepare for this week.

Complete partnered proofreading of Sarah’s chapbook manuscript. Read next four Cantos of Inferno and write Monday’s discussion post. Oh, yeah, can’t forget to respond to the last discussion post – due Sunday night. Begin reading part 3 of Nostromo. Probably a good idea to start some of the Spanish Lab activities – there’s a lot due by Friday. There were only four assignments due last week. Why can’t they spread these out a little better. (sigh) English at Work class…. hmmm… supposed to write and practice a 2-minute elevator pitch. Laundry’s piling up again, too. And I need to work on special-project-stuff for Ice Cube Press. Looks like another busy week ahead.

I assured myself that I had plenty of time. After all, it was only Friday night, right?

Pause. Reflect. Yes, in the first paragraph I did write that it was a “busy Saturday,” because that’s what day it really was. This mixing-up-of-days seems to be an almost-daily side-effect of the coronavirus quarantine. I see people posting meme’s on Facebook about it all the time. I know I’m not alone, constantly having to check my phone to remind myself what day it is. But I sought no such assurances Saturday night.

Confident that I still had a full two days left in the weekend I decided to have a little down time, so I grabbed a snack and turned on the TV to find Men in Black 3 showing on TNT. I Hadn’t seen that movie in years… at least not all the way through, and I’d only missed the first few minutes. Positioning the pillows just so, I made myself comfortable on the sofa, snack in hand, and let my mind drift into the movie. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones welcomed me into another world as Agent J jumped back in time to help Agent K once again save the world from ultimate destruction. Let’s have some pie, Agent K always suggested when they needed to clear their mind of a problem they couldn’t quite solve -- soon after which the solution would present itself.

By the time I actually went to bed a little after midnight, the harsh reality of Saturday evening hit me. (sigh) Agent J, your time jump-device could really come in handy right now. No. No, it’s not an end-of-the-world situation, but it could really make my week a little easier. Not this time? O-Okay, I understand. I brushed my teeth, popped a Xanax, crawled into bed, and turned on the TV to let Frasier and Daphne and Niles lull me to sleep.

Maybe I'll have some strawberry-rhubarb pie in my dreams.
